I think this article brings to light that we are truly in a new age of international relations and international communications. The internet opens of realms of possibility for relatively benign forms of communication such as enternainment, cultural exchange, and news and information sharing, etc, but one of its more dangerous and perhaps more insidious effects is the potential invasion of privacy and “secure” information. As governments become increasingly reliant on computers and electronic data, they also become more and more vulberable to cryptic attacks and raids on secret information. Just as individuals risk identity theft via the internet, governments risk the exposure of classified information. While the benefits of the information are certainly vast and varied, the risks involved are also substantial. As human to human interaction and human tasks give way to computer managed tasks, the potential for such subtle and potentially more harmful breeches of security rises. I believe that the possibility of such an “attack” is far more freightening than tradional espionage or even an actual physical attack because of their silent nature.
